So...what exactly does make the heat come on in this building? It made it up to 36 today but that was the high. Most of the day, it was 35 or below. It is FIFTY-FIVE DEGREES in my apartment!

Howdy - I've lived in the Midtown since 2002. There is a minimal temperature at which the heat is supposed to kick on. I think it has been lowering steadily every year (sorta joking but not really). Anyway, there is a number. It may be 32, or 30, or 25. Tracy Mitchell may know. I think she is our current building manager, she has been with PMC since I moved in. Or the maintenance guy who lives in the building on the 2nd floor may REALLY know. He's been around since I've been in the building, probably knows the systems pretty well. He's African American, probably mid 50s, nice enough dude. I gotta get his name!
That said, you may sometimes be told to use the 'heating unit(s)' (aka the air conditioner(s)) if the radiators are not on. If you have the newer/modern versions of these devices, they should be temperature sensitive and manage the on/off of the thing fairly well. If you don't have a new one (I don't yet; I move from 803 to 804 last year), request one. I've been bugging them for one since last summer.

Thanks for the info, John! I'm pretty sure the number is still 35º but the thing is...for the first week of 2015, the heat was completely broken. It wasn't coming on regardless of how cold it got--and there was a day during that stretch when the outdoor temp didn't even *reach* 35º! The heat wouldn't have come on regardless. Not sure many people noticed it since it's typically freezing in the building regardless. But there were repairs being made. Personally, I think management should have let us know. That really kinda ticked me off.
Also, I have the newest units and unfortunately, the energy saving feature only works for the air conditioner part of it. When you turn on the heat, it just runs and runs and runs until you turn it off.

Thanks Miguel, I didn't know about the heat not being on earlier this month as I was out of town from late December until January 7th. I'm glad it is fixed now.

Heat will always flow from a warm area to a cold one, so the colder it is outside, the faster heat from your home will escape.
